High school sweethearts Jeremie and Abby always dreamed of raising their future children in their hometown. After Abby was diagnosed with a health condition, the couple knew they needed a home that would fit their changing needs, no matter what came their way.
“I don’t have any deficits now,” Abby said. “But we don’t know what the future will bring.”
So, the couple set out to find a home that offered first-floor living with second-floor flex space for their future family.
Building became the obvious answer
In their previous home, Abby and Jeremie found themselves completing house projects weekend after weekend. They knew their next home needed to fit their needs the moment they walked in the door.
“I think when you’re shopping for a home, there’s always at least one or two things that you don’t like that you’re going to have to fix later,” Abby said. “We decided to build because we knew the house was going to be exactly as we wanted it. We picked out everything from the colors to the doorknobs.”
They found a 2-acre secluded lot in their preferred school district. Added bonus? It’s close to family and surrounded by the most beautiful woods.
Finding the right custom home builder was the next challenge
With land in hand, the next step was to find the building crew that could bring their custom home dream to life.
“We went to a few different builders,” Jeremie said. “With every builder there seemed to be something within the floor plan that we didn’t like.”
Like their search for an existing home, they were running into the same need for updates with a custom home. They simply weren’t finding a style that would work with their budget.
“But then we heard about Schumacher,” Jeremie said.
Abby added, “Schumacher was really good with walking us through each process. If I had a question, they always had an answer.”
They were happily surprised to find that a number of high-end finishes come with the standard listed price, rather than an upgrade for an added expense.
“It’s nice that the standard is higher. That’s really why we chose it. The model homes outdid everyone else’s,” Abby said. They stress to others the importance of touring builders’ showcase model homes. Jeremie added, “I’d walk into a room and feel as though I like the room, but I really don’t like this or that about it. Or we went to a few places where we’re thinking they’re asking this much money and it has laminate countertops…this is crazy.”
Then, it was love at first sight
“As soon as we saw The Olivia, it was instant,” Jeremie said. “It was the exact home we wanted. We fell in love from day one.”
Abby and Jeremie delayed breaking ground to sell their previous home. In the meantime, The Fieldcrest was introduced. Olivia might have stolen their heart, but once they were introduced to the Fieldcrest, they knew they had found their forever.
“To us, it was literally The Olivia, but just a bit bigger,” Abby said.
The Fieldcrest had everything they were looking for: formal dining room, spare bedroom, first floor living, and plenty of space for entertaining.
“It’s great for everyday life. The master is on the first floor, my office is on the first floor, laundry is on the first floor,” Jeremie said. “When we look outside of our home, we have that large second-floor concept, and so that’s what we were going for. We wanted to have our daily life happen on the first floor. Second floor was just for additional living and for expanding our family.”
In the end, they created a custom home fit for today and tomorrow
Abby and Jeremie have settled into their new way of more comfortable living in their custom home. And, they have peace of mind knowing they have the space and flexibility to keep their home perfectly suited with every changing need. They took extra care to make practical and beautiful upgrades to their home, including in the:
With their experience, we asked Abby and Jeremie to share their advice to future custom home owners
“I’d say the number one thing is to be patient. It’s not going to be built in a day,” Jeremie said, adding, “Take time to look through things cautiously. There’s a lot of options and upgrades you can put into your home, down to every last detail.”
That realistic perspective is critical in every custom home building process. Jeremie and Abby had a clear home vision in mind but took the time to budget and run the numbers so that they could get the upgrades they wanted and save where they could.
