Home Trends: The Most Requested Customization Requests We’ve Received This Year

October 05, 2020

Homeowners’ evolving tastes bring new trends to the market each year. These eight home customizations stand out as the most requested at our design studios in 2020. It’s an intriguing mix, balancing a desire for more luxury in the owner’s bath with more practicality elsewhere in the home.

1. Bonus rooms over the garage

With at least a half bath, too. Though more homeowners are opting for a full bathroom. It creates a flexible space that can be used as a guest room, play room, or even as a home office.

2. Doorless zero-threshold spa showers

Zero-threshold showers, sometimes called recessed-floor or curbless showers, let you walk in without having to step over a basin lip or tub wall. Often used in accessible home design, zero-threshold showers are becoming more requested because they give bathrooms a spa-like feel. Due to the open design, doorless zero-threshold showers require a full tiling on the floor and walls.

3. Spa showers with dual shower heads and seating

Another variation in the rising popularity for spa-like bathrooms at home. Spa showers with dual shower heads make the owner’s bath a place for homeowners to escape. The space becomes even more inviting and relaxing with seating beneath each shower head.

4. Metal roofing

Metal roofs have steadily increased in popularity. They’re more durable and eco-friendly than asphalt shingles, and for the right home design, the sleek look of metal roofing can be stunning. Some homeowners choose not to do full metal roofing, either, but instead use it as an architectural accent. Our Abigail model home and Charleston Earnhardt model home both incorporate metal roof accents.

5. Extra storage space and “Messy Kitchens”

Homeowners almost always request more storage solutions these days. With more time at home and more family members spending the day under one roof, having easily accessible space to store and get to things has become key.  Besides extra and larger closet spaces, more pantry and kitchen storage is in vogue (and in need for those stocking up).  An extremely popular solution is the Messy Kitchen.  It is an addition to your traditional kitchen floor plan where you can do some behind the scenes work. Think of it as the ultimate kitchen prep space closed off from the rest of the kitchen when you want to hide your mess or the months-worth of supplies and staples you stocked up on.  It adds extra storage and counter space.  Many homeowners include sinks, refrigerators and other kitchen features in their Messy Kitchens.

6. Semi-open dining rooms

Open floor plans remain as popular as ever, but more homeowners are requesting a partial division for the dining area. Not totally closed off, but not totally open either. This subtle division makes the dining area feel more intimate. For some homeowners, that means more quality time with their families, while for others, it creates the right ambiance for entertaining.

7. Optimized garage space

Garage space is easy to overlook. A large truck and a minivan in a two-car garage can feel cramped, not to mention fitting the kids’ bikes, the lawnmower, and maybe a treadmill in the same space. More homeowners are adding a few feet to the garage to account for these realities.

8. Addition by subtraction

More homeowners are thinking about what they don’t need so they can get clarity on what really matters to them. For instance, some homeowners are skipping bathtubs to get more flexibility in their bathrooms. Likewise, some are forgoing fireplaces to prioritize a home theatre setup. The Rhoades family even removed an upstairs bedroom and a loft to create a two-story great room for their home.
