Adele’s Homeowner Story: Building her Dream Home Was Part of the Design

May 24, 2021

There was a buzz about Schumacher Homes in Adele’s local community, due in part to the popularity of shows on HGTV. She also drove by a Schumacher Homes billboard on her way to work, intriguing her even more.  One day, she decided to walk in and learn more at the Pittsburgh Design Studio. Little did she know it would be the first step to realizing her vision of building her very own custom dream home. But it wasn’t just proximity or name recognition that inspired Adele’s curiosity, it was what she saw when she stepped inside.

The HGTV factor

“Their design centers and all of their model homes were so picturesque,” Adele said when she walked into the Schumacher studio. “I did some research and the HGTV factor with Schumacher Homes is just incredible. Everything they have is very current, very on trend.  The design centers were so picturesque, and I loved the materials. It led me to believe that everything would be done well.” The design aspect would become one of the most critical factors for Adele in her home building process.

After doing her homework and homing in on all the exact details, Adele felt confident in her decision that Schumacher Homes was the right builder to bring her vision to life.

Open communication was key to never feeling overwhelmed

Adele was excited about designing her dream home and chose the strength, beauty, and nature of the Earnhardt Collection. She was new to the custom-build process and comforted by the open communication she felt from the design team throughout the entire process.  She knew one of the best things about building a custom home is having a chance to be a part of the process. As enthusiastic as she was though, she admitted she wasn’t entirely clear on where to start. Adele says her experience with Schumacher Homes kept her from feeling overwhelmed through constant communication while keeping her informed every step of the way.

“When you think of building a home, you get excited and you just want to dig a hole into the ground and move in, but you have to be patient,” Adele said, “It was fascinating to learn every step of the build and have the designers answer my questions. I really liked that you can call your builder anytime."

Adele credits a smooth home building journey to the process put in place by Schumacher, a process that keeps everyone on the same page from beginning to end.

A Walk to Remember for Adele

What wowed Adele, and gave her a glimpse into what could be, was the lot walk. This is where the builder tours the site with you before any ground is broken making sure everything can be done to plan.  Adele recalls her lot walk as her first opportunity to meet with her builder in person and to stand on the ground where eventually one day her custom home would be located. “During my lot walk was when I first saw my vision of the home,” Adele said. “I could work with the builder to figure out exactly where the house should be built.”

The process continued into other meetings and conversations with her builder. Adele highlighted the Pre-Con meeting specifically. “This was one of my favorite parts,” Adele said.   “The best part about it is you walked through every single room, you walk through all of your choices that you picked, you go over everything and make sure it is the way that you want it as a homeowner, dot the I’s and cross the T’s. It’s very insightful for you as a homeowner working with Schumacher homes.”

Adele also enjoyed the initial price quote meeting where she picked out the key features of the house, a collaborative process that helped her dream take shape affordably. “The price quote meeting was so valuable,” Adele said. “They priced my dream home, and once I got the final quote, I was able to make revisions to suit my budget.”

Finding unique solutions

From the beginning Adele had stated her desire for unique and distinctive finishes in her custom home. Adele chose Schumacher as a builder who would be able to find solutions to her unique style. Even in the initial stages of planning and preparation, Adele says her ideas were always met with an openness and willingness to do whatever it took to meet her needs even if some of her ideas or requests fell outside Schumacher’s typical sources. “I had some things that I wanted that were very unique. Things that they hadn’t necessarily used in their plans before. And they did a great job of finding a source or something that was similar to accommodate my needs and wants. It was beyond my expectation.”

Seeing everyday progress made the process exciting

Beyond these initial meetings, the Construction Manager for her home would offer regular updates. Knowing what to expect was a big help according to Adele.  Whenever Adele had a question, Schumacher’s builders made themselves accessible and available, encouraging her to visit her home site as frequently as she wanted, even in the early stages of construction.

Adele was seeing her dream home come to life as she drove by the site every day; she was living in a camper at the time. This was challenging, but it made the prospect of her new home even sweeter. If she noticed something that didn’t feel right, she knew she would be heard and the change would be made, whether it was inside or outside the home.

Coming by the site to chart progress often, sometimes even several days in a row, offered a satisfying inspiration. “It’s a really eye-opening experience every day to see something new happening with your home,” said Adele. These moments on her build site made her feel like she was an active participant in her own home’s creation. She was not only witnessing the dramatic transitions first-hand as walls went up, cabinets were installed, and wiring was put in place, but it allowed her to ask questions in real time. “The communication is always open with Schumacher Homes. It was great to have that kind of accessibility.”

Moving in and decorating was Adele’s favorite part

When Adele finally moved in, she was ecstatic. “When you get the keys to your dream home, it’s so exciting because now you can make it your own,” Adele said. “It’s an experience. You go ‘wow” at the end because this is something I was part of. I helped do this. This is my baby and now it has come to life.”
