Building a Custom Bluffton

December 11, 2024

Along the coast of South Carolina, you’ll find a region that is known as the Lowcountry. Spanning from the greater Charleston area south towards the Hilton Head region, this region is rich in culture and history.

One distinctive element of this region is the beautiful architecture. Lowcountry homes often include spacious front porches, high ceilings, an open concept plan and metal roofing.

Built by our Hilton Head – Savannah area, right in the heart of the Lowcountry, this custom Bluffton Coastal nods to the region's architecture. This open plan already included a spacious front porch and metal roofing. Homeowners Michelle and Oscar added personalized touches to make the home unique to their family.

When taking a closer look at this coastal home, you’ll find the perfect combination of texture and natural light.

Bringing in Natural Light

Both Michelle and Oscar knew that they wanted their new home to have high ceilings that would allow their one-story home to feel big and open. To achieve this, they elected to extend the ceiling height in the main living spaces. This meant that the great room, foyer, kitchen, and dining room had 11-foot ceilings. The higher ceiling height was then paired with pine beams in both the kitchen and the great room. Together, this created an open feel throughout the space.

Creating the Perfect Retreat

Adding pine beams didn’t stop in just the great room and kitchen. The owner’s retreat features stained beams in an X shape to add visual interest to the space.

Having a place to unwind at the end of the day was an important factor for the couple. Choosing to add the deluxe Owner’s Bath was a no-brainer as it added space to both the bath area and included an additional walk-in closet. Now the bath includes a free-standing soak tub.

Creating the Perfect Retreat

Golf carts are a common mode of transportation in the Lowcountry area. So, Michelle and Oscar drew inspiration from the local Hilton Head – Savannah Bluffton model home and incorporated a three-car “coastal” garage, also known as a cart garage. This detached garage is connected by a breezeway to the main home and the third bay includes space for a golf cart.
