Building a custom home had always been a dream for Jason, largely in part due to his memories with his late stepfather. “He built custom homes when I was growing up, and I really wanted to honor him by building my own custom home.” After living in a townhouse, Jason was more than ready for not only a larger space but also more land. While he wasn’t sure if he wanted to buy a home or build one, Jason knew one thing for sure, he wanted acreage.
Growing up, he lived on nearly 40 acres of land, so having space to call his own on a smaller scale sounded like the perfect idea for his first home. Keeping his options open, Jason began to look at dozens of properties, but nothing seemed to truly stand out. Most homes that provided the acreage he desired, needed major repairs to make the space livable. These future upgrades meant he would be over his ideal budget, so it just didn’t make sense to him to invest in an already-built home.
Leaning more towards building a custom home, Jason started to look throughout the Pittsburgh area for land. One day after chatting with his mom, everything changed for Jason. During that call, Jason’s mom mentioned a 10-acre parcel of land that she owned and was adjacent to the home he grew up in. “What if you buy those 10 acres from me?” his mom suggested. Not only would it provide him with the land he needed, but he would also be close to family. Without wasting time, Jason completed the sale and soon had land to call his own.
Finding land was only half the battle, deciding on what type of home to build was the next step. Jason scoured the internet and started interviewing builders throughout the area to find what he said would be “the perfect fit”. For Jason he was looking for a custom home builder, he wanted to work with someone who made him feel confident in his decision to build his forever home. During his research, he learned what he did and didn’t want from his home builder. He wanted someone who would handle the building process from A to Z, so he didn’t have to worry about the little things like finding subcontractors. He didn’t want a cookie-cutter house that looked like everything else, he wanted something unique to his style.
After some research, he found Schumacher Homes and thought that it had the potential to be a good fit. Once he met with the team, he knew he found his perfect fit with a builder. Not only would the team take care of every detail, but he knew the quality would be top-notch. “Everyone felt so welcoming,” said Jason. “They made me feel at home before I even had my home.”
From start to finish, the team assisted Jason in every step of the process. When issues with land surveys arrived, his Customer Coordinator Deneen stepped right in and recommended several surveyors whom the office had previously worked with. In no time, Jason was able to find not only a new surveyor, but they were able to fit him in quickly enough to not fully derail the upcoming building schedule.
Getting to see his new Ashton Classic come to life before his eyes was a life-changing memory for Jason. He remembers, “Not everyone gets to build their own house, and seeing walls go up was just so cool.”
Having a home that was personally built to every specification he wanted, is something that Jason will cherish forever. One change he made to his custom home, was adding a fireplace. For him, it makes the space so much homier. Combined with the open layout and nine-foot ceilings, Jason’s custom Ashton is the perfect fit for his lifestyle.
Building next door to his childhood home was already a special moment for a family-focused person like Jason but what came after building made his new home even more special. Less than a year after closing on his custom home, Jason found out he would soon have new neighbors as his brother and sister-in-law purchased the lot next door.
To make things even better, his brother Mark also decided to have Schumacher build his custom home after following the progress of Jason’s build. Plus, Mark was assigned the same construction manager as his brother! His custom home journey from start to finish ended up being a full-on family affair, and Jason wouldn’t have it any other way. He now looks forward to having new neighbors and being so close to everyone he loves spending time with.
