Transforming Your Custom Home with 2021 Trending Hues Guest Written by Sherwin-Williams

March 22, 2021

Over the past year, many people experienced changes that resulted in more time spent at home and using their spaces in new ways. From creating virtual school and home office zones, to workout spaces and meditation nooks, the past year has proven that the home has become a safe haven and that can help people feel calm, relaxed or energized.

For people seeking to build custom homes this year , color and design will continue to play a role in creating inviting spaces, and a fresh color palette can help people achieve a balanced environment in their forever home.

Based on global, social trends and more, Sherwin-Williams is predicting four key trend palettes for the remainder of 2021 inspired by its 2021 Colormix® Forecast. This year’s selections for the new residential market consist of four palettes: Encounter, Continuum, Tapestry and Sanctuary, each designed to help new homeowners select hues for both exteriors and interiors to create a functional and appealing space.

Sanctuary
As homeowners experienced many changes the past year, it’s natural to turn to the home as a sanctuary. The Sanctuary palette features warm minimalist designs influenced by Scandinavian aesthetics to create an uplifting environment. The soft and warm neutrals in the palette bring a sense of calm, light and serenity to exterior and interior spaces throughout.

Homeowners can select versatile neutrals such as Pearl Gray SW 0052, Modern Gray SW 7632 or Pure White SW 7005 to create a haven. To incorporate biophilic elements, which are a crucial part of health and well-being, select nature-inspired hues such as Oakmoss SW 6180,  Antiquarian Brown SW 0045 or Canyon Clay SW 6054.

Encounter
The Encounter palette helps homeowners provide layers of character to the exterior or interior of the home. The palette reflects local and global experiences past and present through warm and earthy colors, inspiring a sense of security.

For example, pair colors such as Java SW 6090 with Natural Tan SW 7567 or

Alabaster SW 7008 to create an organic aesthetic. A deep blue such as Naval SW 6244 or a green such as Rosemary SW 6187 can also be incorporated as a grounding hue for a front door or an interior space.

Continuum
Over the past year, we’ve seen smart living and technology became an important aspect of any space. The Continuum palette is a mix of synthetic and natural colors that help create this transition.

Ocean depths are a source of inspiration for this palette, with blues taking on a trustworthy appeal that makes them versatile for interior and exterior spaces. Homeowners can consider Commodore SW 6524 or Great Falls SW 6495 on a front door or as an island color in the kitchen.

For a more minimalist style, light grays like Crushed Ice SW 7647 serve as an anchor neutral and can be used with aqua tones such as Swimming SW 6764 for a fresh, trend-forward look in an interior space.

Tapestry
Finally, the Tapestry palette is about the resurgence of maximalism, with an approach that is more modern but meaningful. Homeowners can layer tints from this palette to add unexpected accents throughout a space. For example, incorporating an energetic bright like

Enjoyable Yellow SW 6666, a classic black like Tricorn Black SW 6258 or a white like

Greek Villa SW 7551 can convey a timeless yet bold look for exteriors or interiors. For a pop of excitement, add Alexandrite SW 0060 or Cape Verde SW 6482 to a front door or incorporate brighter tones in a bedroom or playroom with colors such as Embellished Blue SW 6749 or Aleutian SW 6241.

This past year has created a desire for people to make their spaces feel more comfortable, cozy and secure. The way people connect to and use the spaces in their homes has changed and will continue to evolve, but the right color palette has the power to not only affect the overall aesthetic of a home but how homeowners will feel and experience it.
