Valerie and Jeff’s Homeowner Story: How a Lot Posted on Facebook Put a Custom Home Within Reach for This West Virginia Family

May 11, 2020

For many who dream of building a custom home, the dream often forms into a plan. A young couple might buy a lot while their children are in school, for instance, then wait until after the kids graduate college to build (just in time for big family gatherings with the grandchildren).

But for Valerie and Jeff, building their custom home happened more serendipitously. “We knew we wanted to build, but honestly we had no plans,” said Jeff. All that changed when the perfect property hit the market. “A friend I graduated with posted a lot for sale on Facebook that was in the area in Charleston, West Virginia,” he recalls. “Within 10 days, we had purchased the land.  We knew what school district we wanted, and the timing worked out perfect.”

With their lot secured, Valerie and Jeff needed a floor plan that fit them as well as their property. The perfect home design didn’t fall into place as smoothly as the lot did, at least not at first. “We had a time selecting our floor plan,” laughed Jeff. The couple had two must-haves in mind while reviewing Schumacher Homes’ designs: a large kitchen for her, and a large basement for him. Finding the right plan took time as Valerie and Jeff carefully studied their options. Their patience was rewarded, though, when they saw one of Schumacher Homes’ newest designs.

“We actually had another plan picked and were getting ready to sign,” said Jeff. But around that same time, Schumacher released a new American Tradition design called the Kenwood. “We saw it online and loved it and switched. I think we were the second house of this plan to be built.”

The Kenwood matched Valerie’s dream of a large, flowing kitchen. Lots of cooktop, countertop, and pantry space made it easy for the couple to imagine hosting and entertaining, especially with how the kitchen opened up to the great room. As for Jeff’s dream of a large basement? Schumacher Homes worked to make that a reality too, adding a full walkout basement.

“We both got what we wanted and more,” said Jeff.

The customizations didn’t stop there, either. Valerie and Jeff also wanted to flip the upstairs loft to the other side of the stairs. That way, the third upstairs bedroom would be bigger for their daughter. And not only did Valerie and Jeff get to work alongside Schumacher Homes’ designers in making these changes, but they also got a front-row seat to watch the build.

“I was very impressed with the poured walls for our basement,” said Jeff. “The poured wall is the way to go. I was also impressed with the detail that was taken on the structure, with the Construction Manager marking spots and making notes to the guys on what needed to be done.”

That level of detail and involvement throughout the entire process left Valerie and Jeff confident in their choice of Schumacher Homes. In November of 2019, the couple moved into their new custom house. Just like when Jeff’s friend posted the lot on Facebook, the timing couldn’t have been better.

“We moved in in November, so the best part was getting to have all the family over for Christmas Day to our house, and it was big enough to seat all 18 in the same room,” said Jeff. “We love our home, it is where all the grandparents now come to visit and it is where we have all our family get-togethers.”

For us at Schumacher Homes, it’s a privilege to show people like Valerie and Jeff how they can make their dream home a reality. We’re grateful, too, to hear how they continue enjoying their homes as their families grow.

“You cannot go wrong with Schumacher,” said Jeff. “You cannot beat the quality and the value.  They make building easy.”
