The right wall texture, like the right paint color or the right trim, is a small detail that can transform an entire room. Texture is an easy-to-overlook detail, though. Many homeowners are only familiar with classic wall textures. While they have their place, a broad range of bold, exciting texture choices are available.
But options are expanding as homeowners explore different materials to create eye-catching wall textures. In fact, we see these four wall texture ideas requested more and more in our custom home plans:
Let’s take a closer look at what excites homeowners about each of these wall texture ideas.
Wall tile makes a statement, and not just in the bathroom or kitchen. Look at what the custom travertine wall tile does for the great room in the next photo. The accent wall elevates the entire room, creating a focal point that’s elegant yet understated. A polished finish brings depth and intrigue to the travertine tile’s naturally rustic pattern.
When tiling walls in larger areas like this, lean toward larger sizes. The photo above uses 12”x24” tile, for instance. This makes the room feel larger. Smaller tile tends to have a shrinking effect, not to mention they often create busier patterns.
This might sound like an odd wall texture idea, but there’s a strong logic behind it. Wood is a great wall accent material because of its rustic character. It makes the room feel stronger, warmer, and more secure. That’s a big reason why many homeowners have used reclaimed wood to texture their walls. But reclaimed wood is expensive, and it’s hard to control the look of it.
Woodgrain flooring, however, makes it much easier to get a consistent wall texture. In fact, many of the homeowners we work with want a cleaner, more monochromatic look than reclaimed wood can offer, especially when coordinating with their floors.
Another benefit to using woodgrain flooring for wall texture is how easy you can mix up the pattern. For example, play up the grain with a herringbone or parquet layout. The changes of direction will make your wall texture all the more eye-catching.
Few materials can create wall textures with as much depth, elegance, and simplicity as 1x wood trim can. Pieces like wood chair rail and cove moldings form designs that evoke old-world craftsmanship, especially when painted the same color as the rest of the wall.
In our model homes, we find that these wall trim designs best fit more formal spaces, such as to elevate the romance of a dining rooms, studies, or even great rooms.
Alternatively, wood trim can be used to create more modern wall textures. In the next photo of a guest bedroom, pieces of stained 1”x4” wood run vertically from up the wall from the headboard.
They then extend across the ceiling, finishing in random lengths. It’s a clean, simple, and one-of-a-kind look that will leave an impression on your guests.
Wallpaper may have a reputation as floral, dingy, and outdated. But today’s wallpaper is bold and fun. So much so that when used just for an accent, its pattern and texture energizes the whole room.
Does a girl’s room need an extra pop of pink?
Maybe your dining room feels a little too white?
Or maybe a bit of ceiling detail would provide a dramatic backdrop for your chandelier or pendant lights? With wallpaper, you can achieve bold or subtle wall textures in a budget-friendly way. Not to mention, it’s easier to change wallpaper.
